Surprise, AZ

Despite several technological developments in orthodontics, the most popular, dependable, and successful orthodontic therapy for centuries has been the use of conventional metal braces to realign teeth and jaws.

Traditional metal braces consist of the typical little brackets that are joined by an archwire and affixed to each tooth to gradually move your teeth into their new positions with the help of small elastic bands.

At Surprise Smiles, our Mesa, AZ dentists and team highly recommend orthodontic treatment such as traditional metal braces to straighten teeth.

The Many Reasons to Get Braces

When it comes to your teeth, the point is to always keep them healthy. The healthier smile you have, the healthier you will be overall. When it comes to keeping your teeth healthy, one of the better options for you is straight teeth. Not only are they able to give you more confidence, but they are also able to give you a healthy boost because they are easier to keep clean. Here are some of the most common reasons that people get braces:

•  Teeth that are crowded too close together
•  Teeth that overlap each other, causing places where debris can get stuck
•  An over, or an under-bite
•  Teeth that do not line up properly, causing a malocclusion, or more commonly called a bad bite
•  Teeth that are simply misaligned or pointing different directions

If you notice any of these issues, or the dentist points out that any of these issues are present while going through a regular dental checkup, it is time to get an orthodontic consultation.

The Many Different Types of Braces

There are many different types of braces available to those who need them. They can be more traditional, such as metal, or even nearly undetectable, with trays that slowly shift your teeth. Here are the most common types of braces that could help get your teeth into their proper positions.
•  Metal Braces: these types of braces are placed on the front of the teeth, connected with wire, and use rubber bands to hold everything in place. While these may be a very obvious form of braces, they are quite effective and can work for nearly any dental issue that could be corrected by straightening the teeth.
•  Porcelain Braces: these braces are much harder to notice, because they blend in with the natural color of your teeth, but have the same basic makeup as traditional metal braces. These require a delicate touch as they are easier to break than metal braces, but they can give you the same effect that metal braces can offer.
•  Lingual Braces: these are the braces that go on the inside of your teeth to help straighten them. They are not always an option, as it depends on the needs of your specific situation, but they are very difficult to notice, making it harder for people to tell you are having work done on your teeth.
•  Clear Aligners: this modern type of braces gives you trays that you change out regularly, that sit in your mouth anywhere from a few hours to the vast majority of your day. They are worn for about two weeks, and each set of trays will provide a different shift to your teeth, eventually giving you the straight smile you were hoping for.

Placing Metal Braces

During the process of placing dental braces, a cheek retractor is utilized to keep the teeth dry and visible. To aid in bonding properly, the teeth should be thoroughly cleaned, conditioned, air-dried, and primed before the brackets are put in.

The brackets are secured to the teeth in the precise location identified during the first inspections using dental cement. After removing any extra dental cement, a powerful laser is used to enhance the adhesion between the brackets and the teeth.

Even traditional braces need to be maintained so that they can function at an optimal level. By the time of your subsequent session, you will be accustomed to wearing braces. You'll come in for a checkup and an adjustment of your braces once a month or so. Your teeth are realigning even if you can't see the effects now.

These brief 30-minute consultations are the ideal time to ask questions and discuss any worries you may have.

The movement of the teeth and the progress made with the braces thus far will be assessed throughout each adjustment visit to aid with ongoing choices. New ties and archwires are then inserted once the elastic ties holding the braces in place have been removed.

Additionally crucial at this time is maintaining good oral hygiene. You should brush and floss your teeth at least twice a day, but you might need to brush a bit more to ensure that no food gets caught in your braces.

Bacteria can grow here and contribute to degradation, which is why regular checkups are required when getting braces.

Braces can be removed after one to three years.

After the braces are taken off, you'll be able to wear a retainer, which you must do on a regular basis. By doing this, you can prevent your teeth from moving out of place and maintain the stunning smile you've worked so hard to get.
