Initial Oral Examination
At Surprise Smiles, our goal is to give you the best oral care possible! In order to give you great oral care, we have to know exactly what condition your mouth is in and how it got there. We will gather this information through our comprehensive initial oral examination. To make treatment recommendations for you that perfectly fits your unique needs we will gather as much information about your teeth and gums as we possibly can. Here is a walkthrough of how we conduct our initial oral examinations.
The examination is essentially the initial visual inspection that we give all of our patients. We will look at your head and neck to determine if lymph nodes are swollen. Your temporomandibular joint will be checked out for proper function. The condition of your lips, tongue, cheeks, hard and soft palates will all be noted. This process is often called charting.
In order to determine the health of your gums, will we do what is called a periodontal probe. We use an instrument that has a very thin metal tip with measured marks running down it and probe between the teeth and gums of each tooth three times. The goal is to find out how healthy your gums are.
In order to get a real in-depth look at both your anterior (front) and posterior (back) teeth we will take a panoramic X-ray of your mouth. This machine is a very impressive piece of technology and allows us to see the hard (bone, teeth) structures of your mouth in high detail.
Bitewing X-Ray Series
When we have seen a patient for some time and already have a comprehensive panoramic X-ray of their mouth we can often conduct a more simple Bitewing X-ray series that gives us high definition X-ray images of your mouth.
Using the data we gather about your mouth we are able to make educated diagnosis treatment recommendations. We can use these to build treatment plans that will help to keep your mouth in tip-top shape for years to come.
